Why Conflux?

If your family is facing difficult decisions, uncertainty or unanswered questions around transition, you’re not alone.

Generational transition is one of the most complex experiences a business family can move through together. Questions about roles, authority, ownership and fairness don’t always have easy answers – and in many families, they go unspoken for years.

At Conflux, we believe that business families flourish when every generation shares clarity, purpose and understanding. We’re here to provide that clarity, through honest conversations, structural tools, and expert guidance that empower confident, informed decision-making.

Common patterns

Informal roles and authority

Roles can evolve without being defined, leaving family members unclear on responsibilities and decision rights.

Conversations left unspoken

Families often avoid difficult topics to protect harmony. Those unspoken questions don't disappear. They surface in other ways.

Different views of what’s fair

Questions about equal versus fair can create tension, especially between on-farm and off-farm family members.

Governance gaps

As businesses grow in scale and complexity, structures don't always grow with them, leaving gaps that create uncertainty.

“Transition planning is often treated as an event, or something to deal with when the pressure arrives. We see it differently. Our approach treats transition as a journey – one the whole family moves through together.”

Phil Alchin, Founder

Our model

Understanding the Business Family System

We see the business family as three distinct yet overlapping systems: family, ownership and business. Each has its own priorities, responsibilities and pressures, and each moves at its own pace.

That perspective is grounded in the Business Family System – a research-informed model that helps families understand how those systems interact and the patterns that arise within them. It informs the way we work with every family at Conflux, and is the foundation for helping them move from uncertainty to shared understanding.

*Adapted from Tagiuri, R. & Davis, J. The Three-Circle Model of the Family Business System.

  • Each family member experiences transition differently
  • Fairness, legacy and identity can mean different things to different family members
  • Conversations are often influenced by long-standing family dynamics, whether they’re spoken about or not
  • Shared values and purpose are what hold a family together across generations

  • Clarity on who holds authority and how that evolves over time is critical
  • Ownership transition is deeply personal, tied to identity and legacy for the current generation
  • Each person’s relationship to ownership is different, and those differences shape how decisions get made
  • Preparing and developing the next generation for ownership is as important as preparing them for the business

  • Roles, accountability and decision-making within the business aren’t always clearly defined
  • Non-family employees and leaders are also part of this system
  • The business may have its own objectives, even when family expectations sit alongside them
  • Aligning business priorities with family values and ownership goals helps create clarity across the whole system
  • Developing future leaders is part of preparing the business for a successful transition

Our approach

A process that starts with listening and understanding.

Our work follows four phases: Discovery, Design, Align and Embed. Each phase gives the work structure without forcing a fixed path or rushing to solutions. We begin by understanding each person’s perspective and surfacing the conversations that are hardest to start.

From there, we work alongside your family to build shared understanding and map a clear direction. Our goal is for every business family to move forward with the clarity, confidence and capability to make informed decisions together – across generations.

Every family's situation is different. If you'd like to explore what's possible for yours, get in touch.
